POLO Architects laureate architectural competition Xaverianen community centre Bruges
The Municipal Council appointed POLO Architects, in collaboration with Tractebel and Buro Groen, as designers for the new community centre in Sint-Michiels, suburb of Bruges.
The plot, bordered by Xaverianenstraat, Koningin Astridlaan and Koning Albert I Laan, currently accommodates a tennis club, a krachtbal and diving club, the Xaverianen community centre and the STUVO student accommodation of the nearby VIVES University. The City of Bruges is investing in new facilities for sports, leisure and culture in this location.
The jury motivated its decision to award POLO Architects as follows:
"The team exhibits its expertise in terms of large-scale and complex construction projects, which is reflected in the proposed methodology for this project. The described vision is interesting in various aspects: very compact building, which is positive in terms of sustainability, small footprint, the creation of a central square connecting various buildings on the site with each other and an interesting location for the car park, which can be shared with Vives."
